Steve is the firm’s principal solicitor and has been a practicing solicitor for over 25 years.
Steve has a particular interest in criminal, family and care matters.
Early in his career, he worked at Redfern Legal Centre before moving to the North Coast with his family. From 1996 to 2004, Steve was the principal solicitor at the Northern Rivers Community Legal Centre.
In 2004, Steve and his partner, Vicki Findlay, founded Bolt Findlay Solicitors & Mediators.
Steve is closely involved in the drug policy debate, particularly in regard to the regulation of medicinal cannabis.
He has been the unofficial lawyer for the Nimbin Hemp Embassy for the last twenty years. He presents legal information sessions at the Nimbin Mardi Grass each year and is also a regular panel member at the event.
Steve is the author of the book Rough Deal: A Plain English Guide to Drug Laws in NSW (now out of print). He has writes on drug law for other general readership publications for the NSW State Library and The Law Handbook.
He also co-authors (with local barrister Sophie Anderson) the Drug Offences chapter in the Lawyers Practice Manual.
Steve has a long history of defending of environmental ‘protectors’. During the anti-CSG blockades, Steve represented numerous protectors arrested at Glenugie and Doubtful Creek. At the Bentley Blockade, Steve offered advice to protectors and ran legal workshops at the camp.
When he’s not working, Steve enjoys Australian Rules football, reading, gardening, Landcare and serious films.
